Local Racers Converge at Montgomery for the Independence Celebration

July 6, 2024

Montgomery Motor Speedway was home for the “Independence Celebration” on Saturday, July 6th. The event featured Street Stocks, Crown Stocks, and something interesting that may not have ever been seen before at the historic half-mile.

The night featured a duel-class event featuring the Outlaw and Late Model Sportsman divisions to kick off the festivities.

Henderson, Patino Take Victories in Outlaw/Late Model Sportsman Feature

Dothan, Alabama’s Cameron Henderson took the overall victory as well as the Outlaw division victory. Henderson was part of a four-car breakaway that was under a blanket for a good chunk of the feature.

The pack of cars included Henderson, polesitter John Burns, Presley Johnson, and Ryan Arms. Arms and Burns would round out the Outlaw podium in second and third respectively.

The Late Model Sportsman cars were vastly more strung out than the Outlaws, with Perry Patino getting the division win. Ryan Reuse finished second and Larry Hughes finished third.

This afforementioned multi-class feature was discussed in the afternoon drivers’ meeting, with drivers agreeing to merge the fields due to the car count.

The six Outlaws lined up ahead of the three Late Model Sportsmen for the feature, with both divisions being scored separately.

There was some anticipated curiosity towards the speed difference between the two divisions, but as was assured by officials during the drivers’ meeting, the difference was marginal at best. The best lap of the race for the Outlaw division was under four tenths faster than the best lap by a Late Model Sportsman car.

Despite the repeated wins, Evans remains in a tight points battle with Huff, who led Evans by a margin of twelve points coming into the week. With the difference between each position being just two points, Evans will need some luck on his side with only three races remaining this year.
