2023 Drivers of the Week

Here, you can find the list of every driver chosen for a Driver of the Week award in 2023, as well as a brief summary of the accomplishment that earned them a spot on this list. It should be noted that since Liberty Racing Review was founded in mid-2023, this is an incomplete list compared to what we will produce in future.

NASCAR Drivers of the Week

May 15, 2023: Kyle Larson – Larson won the Shriners Children’s 200 at Darlington with the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Larson also went on to have a strong performace in the Goodyear 400 before contact with Ross Chastain halted his progress.

May 22, 2023: Kyle Larson – Larson won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Tyson 250, while also winning the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

May 29, 2023: Ryan Blaney – Blaney snapped a 59-race winless streak with his victory in the Coca-Cola 600.

June 5, 2023: Kyle Busch – Busch claimed his third victory of the Cup Series season with his win in the Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway.

June 12, 2023: Martin Truex Jr. – MTJ scored his 33rd NASCAR Cup Series victory after winning the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

June 19, 2023: Ty Majeski – Despite there being no NASCAR action this weekend, Craftsman Truck Series regular Ty Majeski scored the win in the ASA STARS National Tour Father’s Day 100 at the Milwaukee Mile.

June 26, 2023: Ross Chastain – The Melon Man scored his first victory of the Cup Series season with his win in the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway.

July 3, 2023: Shane van Gisbergen – In his first ever NASCAR start, SVG emerged victorious with his remarkable victory in the Grant Park 200 on the streets of Chicago.

July 10, 2023: William Byron – Byron’s win in the rain-shortened Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway gave him four wins on the year.

July 17, 2023: Martin Truex Jr. – “Monday Martin” dominated at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to win the Crayon 301, leading 254 of the 301 laps.

July 24, 2023: Denny Hamlin – In controversial fashion, Denny Hamlin scored his 50th Cup Series victory at Pocono Raceway in the HighPoint.com 400.

July 31, 2023: Chris Buescher – Buescher’s win in the Cook Out 400 punched his ticket to the NASCAR Playoffs, and it also showed that RFK Racing is on the rise back to the top.

August 7, 2023: Chris Buescher – Buescher scored back-to-back Cup Series wins with his victory in the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

August 14, 2023: Michael McDowell – With the underdog performance of the year, Michael McDowell clinched his ticket to the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs with his dominant win in the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard.

August 21, 2023: William Byron – Byron dominated at Watkins Glen to score his 5th win of the NASCAR Cup Series season.

August 28, 2023: Chris Buescher – With the help of his teammate Brad Keselowski, Chris Buescher would win the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona, securing an RFK Racing 1-2 finish in the process.

September 4, 2023: Kyle Larson – Larson scored his first victory at Darlington with his win in the Southern 500, the opening race of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

September 11, 2023: Tyler Reddick – Tyler Reddick kept up the trend of Toyota dominance at Kansas Speedway with his win in the Hollywood Casino 400.

September 18, 2023: Denny Hamlin – Denny Hamlin picked up his 51st career NASCAR Cup Series win with his victory in the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Road Racing Drivers of the Week

May 15, 2023: Christian Lundgaard – Lundgaard won his first NTT Indycar Series pole award, and went on to finish 4th in the GMR Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

May 22, 2023: Alex Palou – Palou won the pole for the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500.

May 29, 2023: Josef Newgarden – Newgarden made history by winning the Indianapolis 500 after an epic last-lap move.

June 5, 2023: Alex Palou – Palou not only won the pole, but won the race at the newly configurated Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.

June 12, 2023: Antonio Giovinazzi – Giovinazzi and crew guided the Ferrari #51 Hypercar to victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with this being the first time Ferrari won at Le Mans in 58 years. Giovinazzi, who has had his chances in Formula 1 and Formula E, showed that he is a true wheelman with impressive skills despite his previous performances.

June 19, 2023: Alex Palou – With his third win in four races, Alex Palou visited victory lane as the winner of the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America.

June 26, 2023: Mathieu Jaminet – Despite his team’s post-race disqualification after the conclusion of the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, Mathieu Jaminet pulled off a remarkable move to pass Connor De Philippi literal moments before the race-ending caution occurred.

July 3, 2023: Shane van Gisbergen – In his first ever NASCAR start, SVG emerged victorious with his remarkable victory in the Grant Park 200 on the streets of Chicago. (Yes, we were so impressed with the feat that we made SVG the Driver of the Week in two categories.)

July 10, 2023: Lando Norris – Lando Norris made his hometown fans happy after his impressive 2nd place finish in the British GP.

July 17, 2023: Christian Lundgaard – Christian Lundgaard gave Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing its first win since 2020 with his victory in the Honda Indy Toronto.

July 24, 2023: Lando Norris – Norris’s P2 finish in the Hungarian Grand Prix gave the McLaren F1 Team back-to-back podium finishes.

July 31, 2023: Max Verstappen – Even after a 5-place grid penalty, Max Verstappen cruised to yet another inevitable victory with his win in the Belgian Grand Prix.

August 7, 2023: Kyle Kirkwood – Kirkwood conquered the streets of Nashville, TN to score his 2nd career NTT Indycar Series win in the Music City Grand Prix.

August 14, 2023: Scott Dixon – After starting from the 16th position, Dixon had himself a remarkable drive to score the victory in the Gallagher GP at the Indianapolis Road Course.

August 21, 2023: Brodie Kostecki – Supercars star Brodie Kostecki swept the weekend’s races at The Bend Supersprint.

August 28, 2023: Pierre Gasly – Pierre Gasly scored his first Formula 1 podium since 2021 with his 3rd place finish in the Dutch Grand Prix.

September 4, 2023: Alex Palou – With his victory in the BITNILE.com Grand Prix of Portland, Alex Palou clinched the 2023 NTT Indycar Series championship.

September 11, 2023: Scott Dixon – Scott Dixon overcame not only a 6-place grid penalty, but also a drive-through penalty after a lap 1 incident to claim the victory in a wild NTT Indycar Series finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

September 18, 2023: Carlos Sainz – Sainz destroyed the streak of Verstappen domination with his impressive win in the F1 Singapore GP.

Asphalt Track Drivers of the Week

May 15, 2023: Jackson Boone – Boone claimed victory in the Music City 100 at Nashville Fargrounds Speedway.

May 22, 2023: Augie Grill – Grill claimed victory in the CARS Tour Pro Late Model race at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

May 29, 2023: Gio Ruggiero – Ruggiero beat NASCAR star William Byron in a photo finish to score the victory in the Tar Heel 250 with the ASA STARS National Tour.

June 5, 2023: Gio Ruggiero – Ruggiero scored his second Super Late Model win of the year with his win in the Midwest 100 with the ASA/CRA Super Series.

June 12, 2023: Tristan McKee – 12-year-old Tristan McKee became the youngest winner in CARS Tour history with his win at Dillon Motor Speedway.

June 19, 2023: Hunter Robbins – Robbins finished 2nd at Five Flags Speedway on Friday night, and backed that up with a victory at Montgomery Motor Speedway on Saturday night.

June 26, 2023: Michael Hinde – Hinde would participate in two 30-lap Super Late Model features in the same night at Citrus County Speedway. The first race would see Hinde take the victory after an intense race, and the second race saw Hinde finish 3rd, therefore giving him the highest average finish of the night.

July 3, 2023: Jake Garcia – Garcia emerged victorious in his return to Super Late Model racing with his win in the North/South SLM Challenge at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.

July 10, 2023: Paul Shafer Jr. – Shafer cruised to victory with his win at Grundy County Speedway with the ASA Midwest Tour.

July 17, 2023: Cole Butcher – Butcher’s win in the Redbud 400 at Anderson Speedway was one for the history books. With this win, Butcher became the first Canadian driver to win an ASA National race since John Cadman in 1992.

July 24, 2023: Jeremy Doss – Doss ultimately scored the win in Night 1 of the Pepperjack Kennels Twin 100’s at Five Flags Speedway. Doss came out of the weekend as the points leader for the Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series.

July 31, 2023: Dylan Fetcho – Dylan Fetcho scored yet another impressive Pro Late Model win with his victory in the JEGS High Performance 100 at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.

August 7, 2023: John Bolen – John Bolen had a breakout weekend at Montgomery Motor Speedway, finishing 2nd in race 1 of the Twin 70’s, and winning race 2.

August 14, 2023: Bubba Pollard – Pollard held off NASCAR champion Chase Elliott to win the Battle at Berlin.

August 21, 2023: Jake Garcia – Garcia returned to victory lane with the Super Late Model, as he won the Georgia Summer Nationals at Crisp Motorsports Park.

August 28, 2023: Carson Brown – A 2nd place finish at Five Flags Speedway and a 4th place run at Mobile International Speedway earned Carson Brown the feat of being the highest average finishing driver of the weekend.

September 4, 2023: Donnie Wilson – The boss man of Wilson Motorsports got behind the wheel of one of his machines and scored the victory in the Winchester 100 with the ASA/CRA Super Series.

September 11, 2023: Kyle Crump – Kyle Crump went from 4th to 1st to score the victory in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Triple Crown Finale at Birch Run Speedway.

September 18, 2023: Jesse Love – Jesse Love scored the victory in the Glass City 200 at Toledo Speedway with the ASA STARS National Tour.

Dirt Track Drivers of the Week

May 15, 2023: Brad Sweet – Sweet earned his first ever victory at Williams Grove Speedway after more than 50 attempts. This was also Sweet’s 4th victory of the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Car Series season.

May 22, 2023: Donny Schatz – Schatz swept both races of the weekend with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Car Series. Schatz visited victory lane at Attica Raceway Park on Friday, and followed it up with another win at Sharon Speedway on Saturday.

May 29, 2023: Chris Madden – Madden scored two wins in three days with the World of Outlaws Late Models.

June 5, 2023: Brian Shirley – After a heartbreaking loss on Friday night at Tri-City Speedway, Shirley would emerge victorious on Saturday after winning his fourth ever USA World 150 at Paducah International Raceway.

June 12, 2023: Jonathan Davenport – Davenport took home the trophy along with $129,000 after his triumph in the Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora Speedway.

June 19, 2023: Ricky Thornton Jr. – RTJ scored his seventh win of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season with his win at Smoky Mountain Speedway.

June 26, 2023: Ricky Thornton Jr. – After his win in Saturday’s Firecracker 100 at Lernerville Speedway, RTJ would hit double digits with his tenth win of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season.

July 3, 2023: Ryan Gustin – “The Reaper” Ryan Gustin had a great comeback win on Saturday with the World of Outlaws Late Models. Gustin had a tire go down during Friday’s race, but would visit victory lane on Saturday at River Cities Speedway.

July 10, 2023: Bobby Pierce – In a jaw-dropping photo finish, Bobby Pierce beat Hudson O’Neal to the line by a margin of 0.002 seconds in the NAPA Auto Parts Gopher 50.

July 17, 2023: Logan Schuchart – Logan Schuchart and his Shark Racing team became $1,000,000 richer with his victory in the Eldora Million.

July 24, 2023: Brandon Sheppard – With two intimidating wheelmen in Hudson O’Neal and Bobby Pierce pursuing him, Brandon Sheppard held on to win the Silver Dollar Nationals at Huset’s Speedway.

July 31, 2023: Ricky Thornton Jr. – RTJ picked up the win along with $62,000 in the 33rd Prairie Dirt Classic at Fairbury Speedway. This was Thornton’s first crown jewel win with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.

August 7, 2023: Kyle Larson – Larson won a thriller of a race with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Cars. His victory in the Ironman 55 came after a wild back-and-forth battle with Logan Schuchart.

August 14, 2023: Kyle Larson – Larson led all 50 laps to take home $185,000 along with the win in the 62nd Annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals.

August 21, 2023: Carson Macedo – After a fierce late-race battle with Brad Sweet, it would be Carson Macedo who emerged victorious in the Jackson Nationals.

August 28, 2023: Ricky Thornton Jr. – Thornton made history with his 16th win of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season, which broke the record for the most wins in a single season.

September 4, 2023: Brad Sweet – After a tough loss on Thursday night, Brad Sweet rebounded to win the Sage Fruit Skagit Nationals on Saturday.

September 11, 2023: Hudson O’Neal – “The New Deal” Hudson O’Neal won the prestigious 53rd World 100 at Eldora Speedway.

September 18, 2023: Buddy Kofoid – Kofoid took home the victory in his home state of California with his win in the Federated Auto Parts 49er Gold Rush Classic.
