As the sun rises on a new racing season, the anticipation and excitement among race fans reaches its peak. The offseason has built up the ultimate level of excitement for this new season, but now, as the cars have rolled through tech and the smell of burning race fuel fills the air, racing returns to the foothills of the Appalachians. The start of the AMP Championship Series has started off with a bang.

David Mason (28) would lead the field of thirteen cars to the green flag alongside Greg Foster (29) in the SR3 Radical division. Evan Lowrey (97) and Jose Aveillez (87) would lead the SR1 Radical division (as a reminder, AMP runs multiple divisions within each race.) Pace car driver Rachel Highler spun while leading the pack in turn 6. Little did we know this would set the pace for the entire race.
The green flag flew and before the first corner, drivers already were battling 4-wide for position. Mason would lead the first lap without any incident. Pete Folger (26) would spin in turn one on the second lap, bringing out a local caution. Turn one continued to claim drivers as Blake Fabiani (88) went for the pass on William Leighton (81) and barely cleared his nose while being entirely sideways. Foster and Mason continued their battle for the lead. Foster went for the overtake in the carousel, but instead he cut through the grass.

Your City Line Nutrition mid race top five: Mason (28), Lowrey (97), Leighton (91), Li (96) and Aveillez (98). The mid-race battle was hot and heavy with Li, Leighton and Folger battling back and forth for positions 3-5, crossover after crossover and slidejob after slidejob. Neither of the three drivers gained any edge over the other. David Mason would take the white flag with a commanding 4 second lead. Mason would claim the victory followed by Folger and Lowrey. With one race remaining, next on track was the Spec Miata class. This class is continuing to grow with 12 cars currently on the grid. AMP regular Raiden Nicol (93) would lead the field to green alongside Tyler Klein (73). Nicol would set a new track record (1:34.482). Turn 1 again continued to be a highly contested corner with drivers pushing 4-wide on lap one. Klein would make contact with Mike Cottrell (99) in turn 11, losing 2 positions on lap 3. Klein would have an uphill battle for the rest of the race, battling heavily with Skyler Cottrell (9). The duo would play bumper cars, bumping and banging side-by-side down the frontstretch.

Your City Line Nutrition mid race top five: Nicol (93), Williamson (64), Klein (73), Cottrell (99), and Garcia (00). Contrell and Klein would continue their battle into the latter half of the race. Cottrell would swing just ever so slightly wide, and Klein would look to his inside to take away his position. In turn 1, Klein would make light contact with Cottrell, spinning the 99 into the inside grass. The 73 of Klein would be issued a penalty, applied at the end of the race for this incident. Contrell would have a mechanical issue shortly afterwards, which would end his day.
Turn one was unforgiving in the 20-minute Spec Miata race, with multiple incidents lap after lap. With two laps remaining, Bill Kring (91) would spin in the turn and nose himself into the wall, ending his day after a strong top 5 performance. Raiden Nicol would take the white flag with a staggering half-lap lead. Nicol would take the checkered flag, followed by Williamson and Klein. For full race results, please visit Race Monitor.

Hi Steve,
Couple of corrections. After the race, all the drivers sat around and talked. Mike and Skyler Contrell are friends of ours and “the boys” were having a great time. Mike (99) told us that he saw the two racing and decided to let them pass in turn one. Unfortunately, Syler(9) was not aware and went wide, pushing 99 in front of Klein 73, who had nowhere to go. His quick reactions actually lessened the blow to Mike.
We offered our camera to race control and were told there was no incident and Klein 73 lost a position due to a yellow flag pass when the two were side by side between flag stands (turns 6 and 7).
We love coming to AMP to race, but don’t really want to be labeled as overly aggressive and especially dirty. Tyler has enough confidence and skill to give room and race clean. He has told me, “there is always the next corner”.
Not asking for a retraction or anything, just understand in the future that these SCCA racers run hard and fair. Your article was very engaging and exciting. Wait until you see the SCCA race in mid-June.
Thanks,
Nathan Klein, Crew Chief, Mechanic, and head bottle washer!
