Huntsville, AL — This past weekend marked an important milestone in my announcing career, as I had the privilege of calling my very first NASCAR Youth Series event at the Huntsville Quarter Midget Association.
The event was Round 4 of the Dixie Shootout Series, a Southeastern tour sanctioned by the NASCAR Youth Series, and it proved to be an incredible showcase of young talent.
The experience was nothing short of amazing. The depth of skill and determination within this community of racers far exceeded my expectations, and it was an honor to be part of such a competitive and passionate environment.
Coming from a background of announcing primarily on dirt tracks—including North Georgia Speedway, Dixie Speedway, and Sugar Creek Raceway—the adjustment to a smaller facility brought a unique challenge. The lap times were lightning-fast compared to the larger ovals I’m accustomed to, and with more divisions packed into the program, I found myself adapting and learning on the fly. That challenge, however, is what made the experience so rewarding.
Beyond the racing itself, this event carried a bittersweet note. Recently, news broke that the Huntsville Quarter Midget Association may be facing closure. For me, that possibility hits harder than most. This track will always hold a special place in my heart—not only for the memories made but for being the first venue where I announced Quarter Midget racing.
Facilities like Huntsville are absolutely vital to the growth of young racers. They provide a safe, competitive, and structured environment where kids can develop driving skills, build sportsmanship, and create lifelong friendships. Losing a track like this doesn’t just impact the local community—it takes away a steppingstone for future stars in the sport.
That’s why the Dixie Shootout Series is so important. As a tour boosted by the NASCAR Youth Series, it gives young drivers across the Southeast the chance to compete at a high level. With stops in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas, the tour has become a premier starting point for kids dreaming of a racing career. Many of today’s professional drivers began their journey in series just like this, making the Dixie Shootout Series an invaluable launching pad for the next generation.
As I reflect on this weekend, I feel grateful for the opportunity and hopeful that the Huntsville Quarter Midget Association can find a way to continue its legacy. The young racers who showcase their skills here deserve a place to compete, grow, and inspire the future of motorsports.
A Special Thank You:
I want to thank the families, racers, and officials who welcomed me into my very first NASCAR Youth Series event. Your passion, hard work, and support made this an unforgettable experience, and I look forward to many more opportunities to call the action as this exciting series continues to grow across the Southeast.
