Dora, AL — For the second year in a row, ‘The South’s Action Track’ saw hometown driver Jeremy Williams score the biggest honor of the season by winning the King of Dixie Late Model feature at Sayre Speedway.
Williams was off to a hot start on Saturday night, scoring the pole by a margin of just 0.003 seconds over Charlie Melvin. By virtue of the redraw however, Williams would find himself starting the 50-lap feature event from fifth position.
Despite early cautions halting the race’s progress, it looked like easy work for Williams. The Dora, Al. native worked his way through the field without much opposition, eventually crossing the line to score the King of Dixie victory.
Despite the dominant performance, mechanical gremlins meant that the night didn’t go as smoothly as Williams and his team made it look.
“Hard work, that’s pretty much what it boils down to,” said Williams to Liberty Racing Review. “Went out to qualify, got the checkered flag, and the clutch blew out. We had to pull the transmission out of it, but got it back together before the race. Got the lead and then started having brake issues. Just lucky, really.”
Saturday night’s victory was the second in a row in the King of Dixie event for Williams, with him now becoming a back-to-back winner of the event in two different kinds of Late Model configurations.
“The car I ran last year is the no. 42 over here, [Jered Moore] bought it from the guy I was driving for. I didn’t want to see it here, because I knew how good it was. The Outlaw [Late Models] are different, the bodies do matter. Trying to run in a Late Model car here against all these Outlaws is really tough, so to do that and win was really big.”

In the images above, you can see the difference between the Outlaw Late Model that Williams piloted to victory in last year’s King of Dixie event, compared to the more regular style of Late Model body that he ran this year. Both types of cars compete in Sayre Speedway’s Late Model division.
Williams’s win wasn’t the only achievement that a Late Model driver achieved on Saturday night. Since the King of Dixie races served as Sayre Speedway’s season finale, Charlie Melvin clinched the track’s Late Model season championship.
