Cordele, GA — While Saturday’s CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car (LMSC) feature at Cordele was plagued by several late race cautions, nothing could really slow down the contenders for the lead, Connor Hall and Tyrrell.
Tyrrell started the LMSC feature from pole position, jumping to an early lead and successfully fending off Hall for some time. However, the midway portion of the event started to show signs of what the later stages of the event were going to showcase.
Following a caution for Doug Barnes Jr. venturing off course and becoming stranded in the watermelon patch adjacent to the track, Hall would jump to the lead on an ensuing restart. However, it wouldn’t take long for cautions to breed cautions per the old saying.
Missing shifts seemed to be a trend all night long, with several competitors stacking cars up and leading to tumultuous contact on restart after restart.
With the calamity ensuing farther back in the field, Hall remained determined to take the lead away, eventually usurping Tyrrell on a restart and virtually never looking back thanks to one additional factor that plagued the late stages of the race.
The aforementioned factor was that of fuel consumption, with the rather excessive amount of slow caution laps leading to multiple cars stalling. Others who managed to not run out of gas had to focus on conserving their fuel, halting the forward progress of most competitors.
The misfortune for others meant that Hall had timed his march to the front almost perfectly, eventually cruising to victory lane in the CARS Tour’s first ever visit to Cordele Motor Speedway.
“I guess watching Mini drive away from me for the last 50 laps made me decide to move up,” said Hall in victory lane. “I’m really glad we did. It was just a completely different race car once we moved up.”
Hall offered praise for the Earnhardt family, his JR Motorsports team owners. Hall even competed with team owner and CARS Tour series co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr., who piloted a LMSC machine in the event.
“I think I’m misunderstood a lot. I moved away from my hometown, my girlfriend and I live in separate states now. I’ve fully committed to making this work. I’m so thankful to Dale and his family, Kelley and L.W. [Miller] for giving me the opportunity to drive this race car. This is all I’ve ever wanted to do. I’m trying to make the most of it.”
Speaking of the two-time Daytona 500 champion and CARS Tour co-owner, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was at one point making progress towards the top five before the event’s final restart left Earnhardt’s car with severe damage, resulting in a 21st place finish.
