New Smyrna Beach, FL — The ending to Monday night’s Pro Late Model feature on Night 4 of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing was a masterclass of relentless yet respectable short track racing.
The 35-lap dash saw Max Reaves, the youngster from Trinity, North Carolina, score his first win of this year’s World Series. Starting near the front of the field and working his way past Alex Labbé early on, Reaves had a tough task that he made look exceptionally easy.
Just hold off two short track veterans, no big deal.
First holding off charges from Labbé, Reaves looked to be somewhat extending his advantage. That was until Hunter Wright stormed through the field. While Wright got past Labbé and stormed to Reaves’ bumper, it would be to no avail.
Reaves led the train of cars to the victory, with Labbé eventually getting past Wright to score second place. Wright would round out the podium in third, with Isaac Kitzmiller and Brody Monahan rounding out the top five.
Upon claiming the victory, Reaves made sure to celebrate in the form of a burnout on the frontstretch.
“That was the most nervous I’ve been in one of these cars,” said Reeves to FloRacing in regard to his victory. “We’ve struggled all week, from wrecking to just sucking. I’m just so thankful for my team, my dad, and everybody. This is awesome. This means as much to me as a CARS Tour win. This is just everything to me.”
Second place finisher Alex Labbé attributed part of his end result to being moved for the lead early on, but was harboring no ill will towards Reeves for the move.
“I’m a veteran now, so I wasn’t gonna rough him up there. It was good racing with [Reaves] and Wright behind me. The three car battle, it was a blast. I wish I kept the lead at the start. [Reaves] used me up a little bit, but that’s racing.”
While exhibiting fast pace when chasing down the leaders before eventually fading, Hunter Wright managed to salvage a third place finish to stay atop the World Series Pro Late Model standings.
“We got a bit messed up in qualifying,” said Wright to FloSports. “Had to start pretty deep and picked them off one by one. Had a lot of fun racing. Us and [Labbé] had a good show for a while. We’ve got a lead, not sure by how much. Just happy to be racing for wins.”
