New Smyrna Beach, FL — A climactic restart with two laps remaining in Sunday night’s Pro Late Model feature at New Smyrna Speedway resulted in flared tempers and strong words.
After a late race caution flag flew for Treyten Lapcevich, Conner Jones and Jimmy Renfrew Jr. found themselves on the front row on the ensuing restart. Renfrew found himself on the inside, washing up the track into Conner Jones.
The result of the tangle for Renfrew was falling back to a third place finish. Jones wasn’t able to salvage as much, ultimately finishing in ninth position.
Renfrew had choice words, not for Jones, but instead for the track crew. Renfrew claimed that oil on the racing surface was not cleaned up, resulting in him losing traction and washing up into Jones.
“One of the cars bounced off the wall and left six quarts of oil on the frontstretch,” said Renfrew to FloRacing post-race. “I saw [track workers] come by my pit this morning with a pallet of speedy dry, but I didn’t see them put any on the track. Pretty slippery up there.”
“I was sideways in the oil, there. I think he was kinda wrecking loose himself. I was telling them that the track wasn’t gonna be good. Shame on the track, shame on the race director for making us race on that.”
Conner Jones had his share of post-race reaction as well, showing his displeasure to Renfrew on the cool down lap in addition to getting heated with his own pit crew.
Also speaking with FloRacing after the race, Jones stated, “We had it won. We were trying to race clean this week, trying to take on a new persona. We’ll have a talk with Bond [Suss] and Donnie [Wilson].”
Jones also went to post-race tech, where Renfrew made his way over to Jones to discuss the incident. While the talk was brief and without physical altercation, officials quickly separated the pair.

A beneficiary of the incident was Hunter Wright, who maneuvered his way past the pair of drivers and went on to win the race. Behind him, Jade Avedisian finished in second in front of Jimmy Renfrew Jr.
“It’s awesome, I’m glad we finally got one on the race track,” said Wright to FloRacing. “Finally crossed the line first. All things considered, you gotta take them how you can get them these days. They got a little rowdy and this time we came out on top of it.”
Randy Sargent and Taylor Reimer rounded out the top five.
