Sam Seawright Claims Elusive Ice Bowl Victory

January 4, 2025

Eastaboga, AL — Whether it be a flat tire, a wreck at the start of the race, or any other version of bad luck, Sam Seawright has experienced it at the Ice Bowl. However, 2025 had different plans for the Fort Payne, Alabama driver.

“Slammin’ Sammy” finally got his much-awaited Ice Bowl victory with his performance in the 50-lap Super Late Model feature at Talladega Short Track.

Starting on pole and leading flag to flag, Seawright etched his name into the Ice Bowl history books, holding off Josh Putnam to score the win.

Putnam had to settle for second, with Todd Morrow rounding out the podium. Chris Jones and Dillon Tidmore rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth respectively.

With the dominant performance that was displayed, was it as easy for Seawright as he made it look?

“No, it’s never easy. There’s plenty of good cars here. It was a lot easier starting on pole with the track rubbered up, but I wouldn’t say it was easy by no means,” said Seawright.

“It’s awesome, man,” Seawright added. “I’ve been wanting to win this race for so long. I won the Governor’s Cup, which is as big as this race, but this feels like the Daytona 500. Everybody wants to win this race. It’s on that list it seems like.”

Some criticisms and complaints sprung forth earlier in the weekend from some drivers in regard to the track surface. Seawright explained how in his eyes, the rough surface wasn’t a dealbreaker at all.

“It wasn’t bad. I feel like any time you have holes and stuff, it makes for a better race. It gives the track a little character, and you don’t want it to be too easy,” said Seawright.

“When you’ve got 400-something race cars, it’s hard to prevent rubber like that. Adam [Stewart] did a great job all weekend, more than most track promoters would do. With daytime racing, that’s as good as you’re gonna get, really.”
