Newbold: My Three Predictions for the 57th Annual Snowball Derby

December 6, 2024

With the 57th Annual Snowball Derby just a few days away, it’s the perfect time to share some thoughts and predictions on how this iconic event might unfold.

Keep in mind, this story is entirely based on opinion—these three predictions reflect my personal take on how the laps and narratives might play out during the week of the most prestigious pavement short track race of the year.

Remember, this is all in good fun. No offense is intended if your favorite driver isn’t among my picks to win, claim the pole, or achieve any other milestone.

With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s dive into my first prediction.

There will be a Snowball DQ.

The Snowball Derby has a long history of post-race drama, and 2024 is unlikely to be any different. With multiple disqualifications already happening this year in high-stakes late model events, including for minor infractions, the strict tech inspection at Five Flags Speedway will likely claim another victim. One of this year’s podium finishers is almost certain to face a DQ, whether for an unapproved part or a minor rules violation. In a race where every detail is scrutinized, teams will push the limits—and some may push too far.

Bubba Pollard will win the 57th running of the Snowball Derby.

In his 20th attempt at the Snowball Derby, Bubba Pollard looks ready to finally win the race that has escaped him for so long. A three-time Snowflake 100 winner, Pollard brings years of experience and a strong car to Five Flags Speedway this December.

His chances will depend on smart strategy, especially managing his tires over the 300-lap race. Pollard’s team is known for quick, mistake-free pit stops, which will help him stay in contention. Early on, he’ll focus on saving his car and avoiding trouble in the crowded field.

As the laps wind down, Pollard’s skill and determination will put him in position to battle for the win. With his knowledge of the track and drive to make history, this could finally be the year Bubba Pollard wins the Snowball Derby.

The LRR crew will eat a total of 13 (+/-) Honey Bun Burgers.

The Liberty Racing Review crew has set a bold mission for this year’s Snowball Derby: to devour as many Honey Bun Burgers as humanly possible, with an under over of 13. Known as the ultimate track food at Five Flags Speedway, the Honey Bun burger is a culinary masterpiece—a juicy hamburger patty nestled between two golden, gooey honey buns instead of a traditional bun. The sweet-and-savory combination is irresistible and has become a fan-favorite tradition at the track.

Fueled by competitive spirit (and a love for absurd challenges), the LRR crew plans to make our mark by embracing the Honey Bun burger experience. Between race coverage and pit-side interviews, you’ll find JP, Reid, Will, Connor and myself balancing cameras in one hand and burgers in the other, racing for own strange yet unique victory.
