Sutton Claims First Super Late Model Win in Milwaukee

June 16, 2024

It was Ty Majeski’s day. It was Ty Majeski’s entire weekend. But none of the weekend’s earlier accomplishments stopped Dawson Sutton from claiming his first ever Super Late Model win in an upset fashion.

Ty Majeski won the opening two stages of the ASA STARS National Tour Father’s Day 100 at The Milwaukee Mile, and did so with the same dominance he had in Madison on Friday. The final stage, however, saw a new challenger attempt to dethrone the current king of Wisconsin short track racing.

Rackley W.A.R.’s Dawson Sutton was hot on Majeski’s trail for almost the entirety of the final stage. But with four laps remaining, Sutton made the move on Majeski to take the lead and never looked back.

“Luckily we had a really good long run car. We were really equal most of the race and then [Ty Majeski] started pulling away around halfway,” said Dawson Sutton. “At the last stage break we got to make some adjustments and found a little bit of extra speed at the end.”

The combination of this being 18-year-old Sutton’s first Super Late Model victory as well as beating the seemingly unbeatable Ty Majeski was cause for elation for the Tennessee driver.

“It’s everything man. First Super win, got my first [Pro Late Model] win at Nashville Fairgrounds last weekend, going down to the Rackley 200 NASCAR Truck race in two weeks. Hopefully we can get a win down there.”

The afforementioned Rackley 200 at Nashville Superspeedway will be Sutton’s second start with Rackley W.A.R. in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and Sutton described how winning at The Milwaukee Mile is big preparation for the race, seeing as how he’s only ever ran on short tracks before today.

“It’s good practice for the truck for sure. I’ve never even been on a track close to this big. Feel like we figured out this track pretty quick this weekend.”

A very loose race car hindered Majeski’s perfect weekend, leading to the late race pass that left him having to settle for second.

“Just got too free. Was trending that way a little bit on the first run,” said Majeski. “I don’t know, I’m not sure if we missed it a little bit, but just got way too free at the end. I was working the very very top trying to get some cooler pavement, and it was working. I thought I was going to be able to hold [Dawson Sutton] off but just got free in. Got a little over-zealous on entry and kinda jumped the cushion per se.”

Cole Butcher rounded out the podium in third place, with Casey Roderick and Billy VanMeter rounding out the top five positions.

The next stop for the ASA STARS National Tour is the Redbud 400 at Anderson Speedway on Saturday, July 20th.
