Fluid on the track, stage breaks, intense restarts – nothing stood in the way of Ty Majeski at Madison International Speedway.
Majeski dominated the vast majority of the ASA STARS National Tour Capitol 200. The victory was simply the icing on the proverbial cake, with Majeski having an expectedly great day in his home state. Majeski’s machine topped the charts in both practice sessions, winning the pole and winning both opening stages of the 200-lap main event.
Casey Roderick and Austin Nason rounded out the podium, with Caden Kvapil and Levon Van Der Geest filling the remaining spots in the top five.
Majeski’s biggest hurdle to climb came at the start of the race, as Cole Butcher jumped to an early lead. However, that lead was very quickly extinguished.
Butcher slammed the turn three wall on lap 63 after traversing over fluid on the track, the fluid being laid down by Michael Bilderback’s car after appearing to blow an engine just moments beforehand.
“I was just in a little bit better position to miss [the fluid] than he was,” said Majeski. “I had a little bit more time to react. Saw some haze off of 2, and you could smell it. I kinda saw some discoloration on the race track. Just picked the right lane to miss it.”
Despite the crash, Butcher was eventually able to return to the track before eventually retiring to the pit area.
After inheriting the lead, it was smooth sailing for Majeski’s no. 91 machine. With his Stage 2 win coming at a margin of over eight seconds, one could only imagine how things would have transpired if the race stayed green.
The stage breaks and other cautions gave the field some slight hope however, but the closest anyone got was on the penultimate restart, when Casey Roderick nearly overtook Majeski but just couldn’t make it stick.
“With low air pressures, my car was on the ground a little bit,” said Majeski about that last stage. “Felt a little bit vulnerable on the restarts. I knew once the pressures came up and the car got off the ground we were probably gonna be okay, and that’s what happened.”
Now, Majeski and the rest of the field turn their eyes to The Milwaukee Mile on Sunday. The Father’s Day 100 is the second race of the weekend for the ASA STARS National Tour’s Father’s Day Doubleheader.
Teams will have a unique challenge on their hands preparing for a mile-long track twice the size of their typical battlegrounds.
“I don’t know that there’s really one shock or spring the same on [the Milwaukee car],” said Majeski. “Very different setups. Obviously we do a lot of preparation to the Milwaukee car with the body and stuff and making sure everything stays in place with the speed that you’re carrying. Same engine, that’s the only part that’s the same.”
