Winger Soars to Victory at Talladega

September 29, 2023

Ashton Winger looks to close out the Hunt The Front Super Dirt Series season with a bang, and his victory on Friday night at Talladega Short Track helped his chances of doing just that.

Winger started the feature event from the 4th starting spot, and once he got to the lead on lap 10, that was all she wrote. A few cautions made things interesting, but Winger held on to capture an absolutely dominant victory in Night 1 of the Jerry Goodwin Challenge. Winger also claimed a winner’s purse of $5,038.

Rounding out the podium were Tyler Millwood and Wil Herrington. Millwood started 2nd and would stay there essentially all night. Meanwhile, Herrington put on a masterclass drive, coming all the way from 21st position to score 3rd place.

Two championship favorites, those being Joseph Joiner and Josh Putnam, had issues that plagued their nights, with both drivers rounding out the two final spots in the feature event. Will Herrington made an impressive jump up in the standings, as he now sits in 3rd, only 19 points behind with three races remaining.

The Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series was also in action on Friday night, holding the first of two races for Red Farmer Tribute Weekend. The man himself, Red Farmer, was not just in attendance for the race, he was behind the wheel!

Another big name in the CRUSA class on Friday night was 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott. Elliott was behind the wheel of the no. 9 machine, but he would ultimately not make the show, finishing 6th in Heat 2 where only the top three cars transferred.

Points leader Cory Hedgecock dominted the entire race to take home the victory. Tyler Millwood and Austin Horton rounded out the podium in 2nd and 3rd respectively. With the victory, Hedgecock claimed a purse of $3,700.
