Doss Wins Night 1 of Pepperjack Kennels Twin 100’s, Mother Nature Wins Night 2

July 24, 2023

Five Flags Speedway was scheduled to hold a pair of Super Late Model races on Friday, July 21st and Saturday, July 22nd. The Pepperjack Kennels Twin 100’s saw some of the country’s best Super Late Model drivers join the Southern Super Series for the festivities.

NASCAR star William Byron was one such driver, racing on Friday with Anthony Campi Racing before heading to Pocono Raceway for all the NASCAR action up in Pennsylvania.

As you can tell by the title, rain conflicted with the plans to race on Saturday, July 22nd, but we will discuss that in greater detail later in the article.

Night 1

Night 1 of the Twin 100’s would see a thrilling race ensue. After leading a majority of the race, Jeremy Doss would lose the lead to William Byron with 39 laps to go. Byron would go on to cross the line first, but post-race tech would see Byron and the Anthony Campi Racing team get disqualified for improper panning under the fuel tank. As such, Doss was declared the winner, with Gio Ruggiero in 2nd and Jackson Boone rounding out the podium in 3rd.

“To run 2nd to William, who’s in the Cup Series, it’s still an accomplishment to me. We led a lot of laps, we had a fast car, I just feel like I used it up a little too much there at the end,” Doss told us in victory lane after his trip through tech.

When asked about being at the top of the standings for the Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series, Doss told us, “We knew we were gonna run all the Blizzard races. With [Casey] Roderick not being here, I kinda felt like…we were the points leader at that point. Just need to keep that momentum up for the next couple races and see what happens.”

Another big moment from night 1 of the Twin 100’s was a huge pileup that occured on lap 5 that resulted from contact between Matthew Craig and Derek Thorn. Timothy Watson, Hunter Wright, and Augie Grill among others were caught up in the carnage.

The Pure Stock feature would see Robert Barber claim victory over Robert Loper in 2nd and Butch Harvell in 3rd.

Night 2

The first story to come out of night 2 of the Pepperjack Kennels Twin 100’s was out of the Anthony Campi Racing team. After an unfortunate night 1 with the disqualification of William Byron, Stephen Nasse would be ACR’s entry for night 2.

Other than that, it was business as usual, for a while anyways. The Modifieds of Mayhem and the Southern Super Series were able to get their practice sessions done with no problems. Rain was forecast pretty much all day, with Mother Nature being kind enough as to guide the clouds around the speedway. That was the case until practice concluded.

Mid-afternoon showers arrived and then ceased, then arrived again, then ceased again, and so on and so on. Despite a fireworks show and the Crown Stock division getting in a 10-minute practice/group-qualifying session, the rains proved to be too much, and the races were called off after several efforts to get the track in race-ready conditions.

The tentative make-up date for the Southern Super Series and Modifieds of Mayhem is Friday, September 22nd.

LRR wants to thank the Bryant family and all the crew at Five Flags Speedway for not only the hospitality, but their valiant efforts to get the races in despite Mother Nature’s plans. We will be back covering the action from the Southern Super Series when they visit Crisp Motorsports Park in Cordele, GA on August 19th.
