Race Recap: North/South SLM Challenge

July 2, 2023

Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway hosted the ASA CRA Super Series along with the ASA Southern Super Series for the North/South Super Late Model Challenge. This 100-lap event would see no shortage of great short track action and storylines. Before we get to that, however, we have some local division festivities to recap.

The Murfreesboro Fence Bandoleros and USAF Legends would open up the day with their races on the 1/4 mile oval nestled inside the 5/8 mile track. The Bandoleros started first, and their 15-lapper would see Colt Johnson get the win, with Landon Thrasher and James Faulkner rounding out the podium. The USAF Legends were split into two groups. These groups were the Pro/Masters and the Semi-Pro/Young Lions. The Pro/Masters would hold their feature first. This race featured a familiar face to Pro Late Model fans, as Dylan Fetcho would join the field. Unfortunately, his day would end 6 laps in. Wayne Grubb would find himself battling with Kevin Rollins at the end of the race, and it would ultimately be Rollins who took the win. Grubb would finish 2nd, and Oliver Cordell would come home 3rd.

Contact between cars was happening all over the track, but this instance went overboard when contact from Michael Crafton ended the day for Dylan Faulkner and Austin Harrison. Faulkner got out of the car and expressed his displeasure with Michael Crafton. Crafton would go on to win with a bump-and-run move in the last corner of the last lap, beating Travis Oliver to the line. Aidan Walker would go on to finish 3rd behind them.

Now onto the main event, the North/South Super Late Model Challenge. Jackson Boone was the fast qualifier, but due to the redraw, it would be Stephen Nasse starting up front. Nasse would run up front all day, holding off Jake Garcia and Michael Hinde among others.

Hinde would have an extremely fast car, but unfortunately his day ended early due to a mechanical failure just short of the halfway mark. Bubba Pollard, Cassten Everidge, Billy VanMeter, and Tony Elrod would all also experience issues which ended their races prematurely.

In the closing stages of the race, fast qualifier Jackson Boone would chase down Stephen Nasse in a very exciting battle for the lead. Boone would eventually take the lead, but with 8 laps left, a radiator hose would come loose, ending the race for Boone.

On the ensuing restart, Jake Garcia would lead over Stephen Nasse, and it would stay that way. Garcia, who hadn’t raced in a Super Late Model since January, took home the win over Stephen Nasse and Gio Ruggiero.

“Ran top 3 all day and had good speed. It was hot out there today and slick, so I feel like it wore out the tires a bit more than normal. Felt like we had a really fast car those last 10-12 laps.”
