Race Recap: 5 Flags / Montgomery PLM Doubleheader Weekend

June 21, 2023

Liberty Racing Review was fortunate enough to cover all the action from this past weekend’s races at 5 Flags Speedway and Montgomery Motor Speedway. In collaboration with Racing America, we have produced two articles that you can find at racingamerica.com.

Those articles focused on the Pro Late Models, with the addition of the Grand National Super Series at Montgomery. This article will feature info on all the divisions that were present at both races. Yes, this might be a bit of a long read, but here you can find the finishing results for all your favorite local divisions from these two tracks.

5 Flags Speedway Recap

On Friday, June 16th, 5 Flags Speedway hosted Allen Turner Pro Late Model Race #2. Joining the Pro Late Models were Crown Stocks, Pro Trucks, and Sportsman divisions.

The first feature of the night was the Pro Late Model 100-lapper. Bryson Shaffer would win the pole, but due to rolling a 6 for the invert, John Bolen would lead the field to green. After a mostly green race, the Rackley WAR stable stood out, with Gavan Boschele crossing the line in 1st and his teammate Dawson Sutton finishing 2nd.

Those results ended up changing after post-race tech, as Boschele’s car was deemed to be too heavy on the left side. With Boschele being disqualified for the infraction, Dawson Sutton would pick up the win, with Hunter Robbins and John Bolen officially rounding out the podium in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

For a more detailed write-up of Friday night’s Pro Late Model events, check out the article from Racing America, written by our own Reid Scott, at the link below.

Next up were the Pro Trucks. Grant Thompson was the fast qualifier, but the dice roll would invert the top 6 trucks, putting Trevor Bowen out front. In the end, Steven Davis, who was fast all day long throughout practice and group qualifying, would take home the victory. Treyce Capers would settle for 2nd, and Grant Thompson finished in 3rd to round out the podium.

The Sportsman division hit the track next. Maddox Langham, the Sportsman fast qualifier, would roll a 4 for the invert, so Jonathan Langham would start up front for the feature. The invert would prove to be nothing at all for Maddox Langham to overcome, as he would cut through the field with little hesitation to score the victory. James Patrick would finish in 2nd, and Chad Robinson would round out the podium in 3rd.

Finally, the Crown Stocks hit the track to put an end to the night’s festivities. The lineup for the 15-lap Crown Stock feature was determined by two 6-lap heat races, in which Ryan Maxwell and Garrison Story would win respectively. Neither driver would reach victory lane, however. Adam Salter would make an epic early drive through the field, as well as masterfully defend during a green-white-checkered finish, to score the victory. Montgomery Motor Speedway Recap

The first division to hit the track at Montgomery on Saturday, June 17th was the Grand National Super Series. This series had two separate features, both scheduled to be 50 laps like every other GNSS event. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, the second GNSS race that wrapped the night’s festivities was shortened to 40 laps. Jeremy Mayfield would go on to win GNSS Feature 1, and A.J. Henriksen won GNSS Feature 2.

The main show of the night, the Show Me The Money Pro Late Models, held their 100-lapper feature as the second race of the night. Due to qualifying being rained out, the series points would dictate the starting order. As such, Bryson Shaffer started on pole, but he would eventually fade back through the field. Hunter Robbins worked his way through the field, and as the sun set, his car got better and better. Hunter Robbins would claim victory, with Chris Tullis in 2nd and Augie Grill in 3rd.

For a more detailed recap of the PLM and GNSS features from Montgomery, check out the Racing America article below, which was also written by LRR’s Reid Scott. This article also touches on Jeremy Mayfield’s start in the Outlaw feature.

The Late Model Sportsman cars were the first local division to hit the track at MMS on Saturday. The dice roll would result in a top 2 invert, meaning that Jason Furrow and Billy Melvin would start on the front row. Melvin would get out to an early lead, as he was on an absolute tear. However, after a pair of cautions, Perry Patino would take the lead and never look back. Patino would see the checkered flag first, with Jake Daniels finishing in 2nd and Billy Melvin having to settle for 3rd place.

Late Model Sportsman Feature Results:

  1. #22 Perry Patino
  2. #17 Jake Daniels
  3. #59 Billy Melvin
  4. #5 Chris Wagner
  5. #28 Roger Reuse
  6. #89 Ryan Reuse
  7. #12 J.R. Hartley
  8. #1 Greg Pigford
  9. #21 Cole Payton
  10. #21F Jason Furrow
  11. #68 Drew Murchison

Outlaws hit the track next, and their race was full of drama and action. John Heil and Chad Chaffin would start on the front row after an invert of the top 4 from qualifying. Among other wrecks, the most notable was an incident between the two leaders. With 9 to go, Chaffin was all over the bumper of Heil, and in the middle of turns 1 and 2, contact from Chaffin’s car spun both drivers around. After that incident, Ryan Arms would find his way to the front, and he would take home the victory in his first trip to Montgomery Motor Speedway. After all the drama between Heil and Chaffin, they would both still finish in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Tempers flared between both crews after the race, but that’s just a part of short track racing.

Outlaw Feature Results:

  1. #8 Ryan Arms
  2. #29 John Heil
  3. #3C Chad Chaffin
  4. #54 Connor Sutton
  5. #32 Stuart Dutton

  8. #08 Spencer Bragg
  9. #87 John Burns
  10. #121 Branden Ray
  11. #41 Jeremy Mayfield

The final division we have to cover is the Street Stocks. After a top 2 invert, Trey Huff would start on the pole. Huff led a majority of the first half of the race, but in the end, Jonathan Langham would break through to win. His brother, Maddox Langham, would bring it home 2nd. Charlie Melvin finished with a respectable 3rd place.

Street Stock Feature Results:
